Once know for its chicken population, Albany’s Kell Park is now the site of a community-driven clean-up. The end of September project involves a long overdue renovation of the historically important Lucas Creek.
When local Paremoremo woman, Cathy Bourne, along with her daughter Mikayla, supported by husband Mike, started delving into the history of the Lucas Creek she was captivated. Cathy and Mikayla went for a walk along the creek, under the bridge and along the path until they were suddenly stopped in their tracks. They couldn’t believe their eyes. There was a beautiful waterfall in an area that looked totally forgotten about. The whole area had become quite overgrown.
On talking with Nicky Malone from Parks and Reserves, Cathy and Mikayla hatched a plan to start a big clean up. The Carl Bekker and the Shore Community Church pledged their support. they made the decision to focus their ‘Servetember” project on helping to clear out the weeds and plant native species.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th September is going to be a weekend where the Community, the Church and the Council all come together to restore this area back to its former glory.
